Choosing the Right Board
Different projects call for different timber, and it pays to think about how the finished floor or deck will be used before ordering. A few things worth considering:
- Hardwood Decking: Durable, dense and well suited to Mackay's climate. A strong choice for exposed decks and high-traffic areas.
- Pine Decking: A more budget-friendly option when treated correctly, and easier to work with on smaller DIY projects.
- Hardwood Flooring: Solid hardwood boards for internal use, giving a finish that ages well and can be sanded back over time.
- Board Widths & Profiles: Available in a range of widths and profiles to suit modern and traditional styles.
Frequently Asked Questions
Narrower boards, around 90mm, move less across the width and are less prone to cupping, which is why they are the common choice for exposed decks. Wider boards up to 140mm look striking but move more with moisture and need tighter fixings and careful spacing. Match the width to the exposure and the substructure.
A gap of around 3 to 5mm between boards allows for drainage, ventilation and seasonal movement. Green or high-moisture boards can be laid tight because they shrink as they dry, while kiln-dried boards need the gap built in at install. Always check the manufacturer's recommendation for the specific product.
Solid hardwood is a single piece of timber that can be sanded back and refinished many times through its life. Engineered flooring has a hardwood wear layer bonded to a plywood or composite base, which improves dimensional stability in humid conditions but limits how many times it can be re-sanded.
