Common Hardwood Applications
Hardwood is a common choice when strength, longevity and appearance matter. Some of the ways our customers use our hardwood include:
- Structural Framing: Bearers, joists, posts and beams for verandahs, decks, sheds and additions.
- Fencing: Hardwood posts, rails and palings that will outlast most alternatives in the Mackay climate.
- Decking & Flooring: Hardwood boards for internal flooring and external decks that hold up to weather and wear.
- Custom Beams & Slabs: Feature beams and slabs milled to your specifications for renovations and shed builds.
Frequently Asked Questions
Australian hardwoods are naturally dense and contain higher levels of extractives that resist rot, insects and weather. Many species carry a Class 1 or Class 2 in-ground durability rating and can perform in exposed conditions without chemical treatment, while most softwoods need preservative treatment to reach a comparable service life.
The F-grade is a stress rating that indicates how much load the timber can carry, such as F7, F14, F17, F27 and so on. Higher F numbers mean stiffer, stronger timber. Engineers and the building code specify a minimum F-grade for structural members like bearers, joists and beams.
Naturally durable hardwood does not need a chemical preservative for exterior use, but an oil or sealer helps control surface checking, greying and moisture movement. Interior hardwood floors and joinery are usually finished with an oil, wax or clear coating for wear protection.
